ATUL GAWANDE

Overview

Atul Gawande is an American surgeon, public health researcher, and writer. He was born on November 5th, 1965, in Brooklyn, New York to Indian immigrants (this plays a role in the perspective he takes in his writing). His family moved to Athens, Ohio, shortly after he was born, so he spent most of his childhood there.

Gawande obtained his undergraduate degree from Stanford University in 1987 in political science and biology. He went on to obtain an MA from Balliol College, Oxford, in philosophy, politics and economics (PPE). After obtaining his MA, Gawande received his MD (Doctor of Medicine) and MPH (Masters in Public Health) from

Harvard University. During his residency, Atul Gawande was recruited by his friend to write for the online magazine, Slate. His writing caught the attention of The New Yorker, and became a staff editor for them in 1988. 

Career

Gawande practices general and endocrine surgery at Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston. He is the founding executive director and chairman of Ariadne Labs, and chairman of Lifebox (a nonprofit to make surgery safer around the world). He is a professor at Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health in the Department of Health Policy and Management as well as at Harvard Medical School as the Samuel O. Thier Professor of Surgery.

 

Gawande has been a staff writer for The New Yorker since 1988. He also has written four New York Times best sellers: Complications, Better, The Checklist Manifesto, and Being Mortal: Medicine and What Matters in the End.

1. He is CEO of the non-profit-seeking health care venture formed by Amazon (Jeff Bezos), Berkshire Hathaway (Warren Buffett), and JPMorgan Chase (Jamie Dimon) to deliver better outcomes, satisfaction, and cost efficiency in care.
