Do you want to die suffering in a hospital bed? Today, over 50% of Americans die this way, according to Atul Gawande. Patients with terminal illnesses decide to continue fighting, despite their low odds of survival. Doctors haven't helped with solve this problem either. It has been cited by Gawande that 40% of oncologists offer treatment that they themselves don't believe will work with the goal of making the patient feel like they are still fighting. This may seem like the only option in today's world, but there is another option to enhance the end of your life--hospice. Hospice care is designed to give supportive care to people in the final phase of a terminal illness and focus on comfort and quality of life, rather than cure. The goal is to enable patients to be comfortable and free of pain, so that they live each day as fully as possible. Gawande has found that patients that stop chemotherapy and go on hospice sooner experienced less suffering at the end of their lives AND they lived 25% longer than patients continuing treatment. We shouldn't be spending our last moments suffering in a hospital bed, we should be spending them in the comfort of our homes with our friends and family. Don't let you or your loved ones suffer at the end of their lives. Learn more about hospice to see if it's the right choice for you or your loved ones.
